Quality Points for Grade Calculation

Quality Points for Grade Calculation

The School District of Lee County recently adopted Quality Points for grade calculation.

Why did the district make this change?

  • It follows the Florida Department of Education recommended calculation for courses that have an end-of-course (EOC) assessment required as 30 percent of the annual course grade, which the school district already uses.
  • Grades are a more accurate reflection of what students have learned and accomplished in school by mitigating the 0-59 percentage range of an F as compared to the 10-point system for letter grades of A, B, C, and D.
  • It mirrors the grade point average (GPA) calculation model.

What does this mean for my child?

Parents/Guardians will continue to see percentage points in the FOCUS Portal; however, interim and report cards will reflect letter grades.

How is the final course grade calculated?

A complete description of this can be found in the Student Progression Plan (page 21). Grades are calculated on a 4-point scale (A=4, B=3, C=2, D=1, F=0) and will continue to be given the following weights (as prescribed by the State of Florida).

Middle School Courses are calculated as follows:
Quarter 1 (25%) + Quarter 2 (25%) + Quarter 3 (25%) + Quarter 4 (25%) = Final Course Grade

High School Courses taken by middle school students are calculated as follows:
Semester 1 grade (35%) + Semester 2 grade (35%) + EOC grade (30%) = Final Course Grade

Middle School Civics, which contains an EOC, is calculated as follows:
Quarter 1 (17.5%) + Quarter 2 (17.5%) + Quarter 3 (17.5%) + Quarter 4 (17.5%) + EOC grade (30%) = Final Course Grade

EOC scores are translated as follows:

  • Level 4 or 5 = A
  • Level 3 = B
  • Level 1 or 2 = D
