How Lee County Public Schools Are Competing—and Winning—in Today’s Educational Landscape

Across Florida, many school districts are struggling to compete with the growing number of private, charter, and home education options available to families. But here in Lee County, our story is very different. Through strategic planning, strong leadership, and a commitment to innovation, the School District of Lee County has positioned itself as a top competitor—offering programs, opportunities, and results that rival or surpass what families can find anywhere else. The one area where we must continue to improve is promoting these successes to the public, and that work is already underway.

Academically, Lee County has taken decisive steps to strengthen the foundation of learning. Our focus on early literacy, writing, and math is restoring the fundamentals that parents want to see in their children’s education. At the middle and high school levels, we offer some of the most extensive advanced academic opportunities in the state, from AICE and IB to AP and dual enrollment at both FGCU and FSW. Students can graduate with a significant head start on college—often two years of tuition-free credits—an advantage many private schools simply cannot match.

Just as important as academics is school culture. Families want safe, orderly, and positive learning environments. Lee County has invested heavily in school safety, behavioral expectations, and strong school leadership, ensuring that classrooms remain focused and productive. This consistent commitment to student well-being is one of the reasons families stay with our public schools.

Where Lee County truly excels is in the breadth of opportunities we offer. Few districts in Florida can match our Career & Technical Education pathways—programs that prepare students directly for high-wage careers in health sciences, cybersecurity, automotive technology, HVAC, welding, culinary arts, construction trades, and more. We proudly operate the largest JROTC program in the nation, giving students unmatched leadership and career development opportunities. Add to that vibrant music, arts, and athletic programs, and it becomes clear that our public schools provide a depth of experience that private schools cannot replicate.

Our district is also leading the state in teacher recruitment strategies. The incentive pay model for high-performing educators who choose to work in our most challenging schools was recently recognized publicly by the Commissioner of Education. This approach not only elevates instruction where it is needed most but demonstrates that Lee County is unafraid to innovate to support teachers and students.

With all of these strengths, one challenge remains: many families simply do not know the full extent of what Lee County Public Schools offer. Public schools historically have not promoted themselves the way private schools do, but that era is ending. We are actively improving communication, increasing transparency, and elevating the success stories of our students, staff, and schools. From digital outreach to community partnerships, the district is committing to telling its story—and telling it well.

Lee County is not losing ground. In fact, we are competing exceptionally well. With continued investment in communication and community engagement, more families will see what those inside the system already know: public education in Lee County is strong, forward-thinking, and delivering opportunities that prepare students not just for graduation, but for life.

Respectively,
