A Smooth Transition Built Into Every Middle School

Moving from elementary to middle school is one of the biggest milestones in your child’s educational journey. It’s natural for both students and parents to feel a mix of excitement and anxiety about bigger campuses, new routines, and older students.

That’s why the School District of Lee County designed The 6th Grade Advantage—a district-wide "school-within-a-school" model built specifically for 11- and 12-year-olds. Across our middle schools, we create dedicated environments where 6th graders can adjust to middle school academics and social life at their own pace, surrounded by their peers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do all Lee County middle schools have the 6th Grade Advantage?

Yes! While campus architecture varies across the district, every Lee County middle school utilizes the 6th Grade Advantage framework to provide designated spaces, schedules, and support systems tailored to incoming 6th graders.

How does this help my child academically?

By removing the social stress of navigating older peer groups, students can focus on learning new organizational skills, adapting to multiple class periods, and building strong relationships with their teachers.

Will my 6th grader interact with 8th graders during the school day?

Our middle schools design their schedules and campus layouts specifically to limit interaction. 6th graders have dedicated learning areas (wings, floors, or buildings) and separate core class schedules. While some shared spaces like the media center or elective hallways exist, transition times and lunches are structured to keep 6th graders together.
