The School District of Lee County and Florida Gulf Coast University (FGCU) College of Education are launching an innovative and exclusive program designed to inspire and prepare the next generation of educators.
As part of the partnership, FGCU students enrolled in EDG 3323: Professional Teaching Practice will host their university course directly on two Lee County school campuses: Veterans Park Academy for the Arts, led by Principal Edwin Carter with FGCU course instructor Lori Hammond, and San Carlos Park Elementary, led by Principal Amy Bobak with FGCU course instructor Teri Byrne-Knell.
The unique model blends both theory and practice. Students first engage in coursework led by FGCU instructors on-site, then immediately step into classrooms to gain hands-on experience working alongside veteran educators.
This groundbreaking program is the only one of its kind in the region and aims to immerse students in the world of education, providing them with the tools, mentorship, and practical knowledge needed to pursue a career in teaching. Many of which did not start as education majors.
“We are thrilled to partner with FGCU on this exclusive initiative,” said Inez Mata, Talent Acquisition Coordinator for The School District of Lee County. “This program not only brings future educators directly into our schools but also gives them the opportunity to see firsthand the impact they can have in the classroom. By blending theory with practice, we are building a strong and sustainable pipeline of future teachers who will one day serve the students of Lee County.”
The program represents the School District’s continued commitment to innovative recruitment strategies that strengthen the local educator workforce while providing valuable professional development opportunities for aspiring teachers.
