School Board Approves Superintendent Contract

Dr. Christopher Bernier will be sworn in as Superintendent for the School District of Lee County on May 16, 2022. The Lee County School Board approved a two-and-a-half year contract for Dr. Bernier on Tuesday night that automatically extends to three and a half years if the proposal to make the superintendent an elected position fails in the state legislature or at the ballot box.

“I am grateful to the Lee County School Board for giving me the opportunity to lead this District and look forward to working with Superintendent Ken Savage during the transition,” Dr. Bernier says. “I am committed to helping every student succeed by supporting the District’s vision of being a world class school system and am eagerly anticipating getting to know our schools, staff, students, families and community.”

The Lee County School Board also approved a consultant contract for Dr. Bernier to begin working immediately for the District. During this interim period Dr. Bernier will develop a plan for his first 100 days, consult with current Superintendent Dr. Ken Savage, consult with Board members and District staff, and observe and review board meetings to provide feedback for continuous improvement.

Dr. Bernier is leaving his position as Chief of Staff for the Clark County School District in Las Vegas, Nevada to join the School District of Lee County. Clark County is the nation’s 5th largest school district with 310,000 students and an annual budget of $5.3 billion. Dr. Bernier previously spent 32 years with the Orange County Public Schools in Orlando working his way up from teacher, to principal to eventually Associate Superintendent for nine years.

The search for a superintendent began in April 2021 when after more than five years of leading the District Dr. Greg Adkins announced his retirement. Dr. Ken Savage was named Interim Superintendent in June 2021 while the Board undertook a nationwide search. Dr. Bernier was selected as the next superintendent after the final round of interviews on February 1st and entered into the now successfully concluded contract negotiations.
