District Honored as Cambridge International’s District of the Year

The School District of Lee County is excited to announce it has been selected as Cambridge International’s District of the Year in the Large District category for the 2021-2022 school year. This award is based on exams taken during the November 2020 and June 2021 series, one of the most challenging for schools as they navigated the pandemic.

“We are honored to receive this recognition,” says Chief Academic Officer Dr. Jeff Spiro. “Three years ago, we developed a strategic initiative to open doors for students and expand opportunities and access to the most rigorous courses. This is a great recognition of our goal. Ultimately it is our leaders, teachers and students who made this a reality. Kudos Lee County!”

All 15 high schools in the District offer Cambridge programs. Students are challenged with college level courses and can graduate with a Cambridge AICE Diploma that is recognized by leading universities around the world. The diploma also qualifies students for the Florida Bright Futures Academic Scholarship which covers four years of tuition at a Florida college or university.

“Since 2018-19, your district has expanded access to Cambridge International exams, with exam entries up 81%,” says Mark Cavone, Regional Director for Cambridge International. “Your district has also continued to provide a breadth of Cambridge course offerings to high schools in your district. Your students continue to achieve high pass rates on Cambridge exams as well, averaging 74% in 2020-21, which is a testimony to the hard work of teachers, school and district leaders and administrators, parents, and students.”

In February, two Lee County seniors won national awards for their performance on the June 2021 Cambridge Advanced International Certificate of Education (AICE) Assessments.

Estero High School student Hayden Germanis earned a “Top in Country” award for Digital Media and Design. “Top in Country” awards are presented to students who earn the highest standard mark in the nation in an individual subject.

Mathew Powell from Lehigh Senior High School is a “Best Across Four” award winner for attaining the highest cumulative total standard marks in the country in four AS level assessments.

Every year Cambridge International also honors three exceptional districts across the U.S. in large, medium, and small district categories. Within each category, they recognize the district that ranks highest based on the following criteria:

  1. increasing access to rigorous Cambridge curriculum,
  2. sustaining or improving student performance on exams, and
  3. committing to equity in education for all students.

Cambridge International will present the School District with a plaque and has offered to host a recognition ceremony on a date to be determined.
