Student Musicians Joins Touring Show Beatles vs. Stones – A Musical Showdown

When the touring show Beatles vs. Stones – A Musical Showdown comes to the Southwest Florida Event Center on Thursday, March 21, a string quartet composed of students from Cypress Lake, North Fort Myers and Fort Myers High Schools and Cypress Lake Middle School will have the privilege of joining the professional musicians on stage to add some orchestral texture to the evening.

The show pits Rolling Stones tribute band Satisfaction against rival Brit boys tribute band Abbey Road in an all-out musical showdown for rock dominance. The string quartet of Isabel Liu, David Liu, Michael Thomas and Adriana Robertson will join the bands for seven songs: "Eleanor Rigby," "Yesterday," "A Day in the Life," "Hello Goodbye," "Hey Jude," "As Tears Go By," and "Ruby Tuesday."

“I really like ‘Hey Jude’ and am excited to play it in the Beatles vs. Stones show,” Adriana Robertson says. The 16 year old cello player is a member of the Southwest Florida Youth Symphony, the All-County Band, the North Fort Myers High School Jazz Band and Marching Band.

David Lui is the other Beatles fan in the quartet. David is 14, plays the violin for the Southwest Florida Youth Symphony, is a member of Fort Myers High School’s Algebra 2 Math Team and is an intern for a local drone company. “Of all the Beatles songs, I really like playing ‘Eleanor Rigby’,” David says.

The producers of Beatles vs. Stones approached Southwest Florida Symphony Interim Manager Angela Massey looking for a talented ensemble of high school students which could hold their own with a rock band in front of an audience. The show commonly reaches out to local high school orchestras, making donations to their school music programs in exchange for student participation.

12 year old Isabella Lui started playing the violin at seven. She’s a member of the Southwest Florida Youth Symphony Quartet and Orchestra and runs Cross Country for Cypress Lake Middle School. “I like being in orchestra because I like being in a bigger group where your part gets to blend with the others to create more complex harmonies,”
Isabella says.

The fourth member of the quartet is 16 year old viola player Michael Thomas. “I like that I get to learn from the other people in orchestra and see the different ways we all play,” he says about this opportunity. Michael is a member of the Southwest Florida Youth Symphony and the Cypress Lake High School Orchestra.
