School District Recognized for Excellence in Education

The School District of Lee County has been recognized as a 2024 Cognia® System of Distinction for excellence in education. A Cognia® System of Distinction effectively implements high-quality instruction, shows consistent organizational effectiveness, and is committed to continuous improvement. It also demonstrates an energetic and sustained commitment to learners.

“Being named a Cognia System of Distinction is an incredible honor and a reflection of the dedication and hard work of our teachers, staff, students, families, and leadership,” said Superintendent Dr. Denise Carlin. “This recognition validates our ongoing commitment to academic excellence, innovation, and continuous improvement, and it inspires us to keep increasing achievement levels for every student.”

During the 2023-2024 school year, the School District participated in Cognia’s rigorous Accreditation Engagement Review process, which is grounded in research-based performance standards. The process includes a period of self-assessment, an evaluation conducted by trained external, third-party evaluators, and an improvement phase focused on the evaluation’s results. The Cognia Performance Standards for K-12 accreditation are based on the latest research and understanding of learning, teaching, and leading. Once accredited, an institution engages in a similar engagement review process at least every six years to maintain Cognia Accreditation.

“The School District of Lee County is to be commended for earning the designation as a System of Distinction,” said Dr. Mark A. Elgart, president and CEO of Cognia. “Cognia Accreditation is a mark of school quality recognized around the world. Being named a School or System of Distinction further acknowledges the demonstrated commitment to education quality and a mindset of continuous improvement the School District of Lee County has for its learners.”

1,952 schools or systems hosted a Cognia Accreditation Engagement Review during the 2023-2024 school year. Only 49 schools and 11 systems met the rigorous standards for distinction.

The School Board of Lee County officially accepted the Cognia System of Distinction award at their June 3rd Board meeting.
