Diplomat Middle School Civics teacher Aimee Bailey is heading back to Washington, D.C. This summer, Bailey will attend the prestigious White House History Teacher Institute, not just as a participant, but as an elite Master Teacher helping to lead the national program.
Sponsored by the White House Historical Association, the institute provides educators from across the country with immersive, high-quality professional development. After attending as a participant in 2024, Bailey underwent a rigorous application and interview process to secure her role as a Master Teacher for the 2026 cohort.
“The White House Historical Teacher Institute was a career-changing experience for me,” Bailey said. “I felt like I was going to be the least knowledgeable teacher there, but what I experienced was an inviting, collaborative environment where everyone was nonjudgmental. We all just wanted to learn! My goal as Master Teacher is to provide meaningful pedagogical strategies and resources that participants can take back and use in their own classrooms.”
Bailey’s journey into education is proof that it is never too late to find your true calling. A career-changer who graduated from college at age 30, she joined the School District of Lee County in 2017 as a paraprofessional. That classroom experience sparked a fire, leading her to become a teacher three years later.
After teaching fourth-grade math and science for three years, Bailey followed her true passion for history and working with older students to join Diplomat Middle School as a 7th-grade Civics teacher in 2023.
"To many, 7th grade is not an ideal spot, but I love that age. They need us more than you think, and they are hilarious," Bailey said. "Relationships and expectations are the foundation for everything! I am not an easy teacher, and they may not always like me in the moment, but they know I am never going to give up on them."
Her dedication hasn't gone unnoticed. Diplomat Middle School Principal Jason Plucker praises Bailey as one of the district's best, citing her ability to push students past their self-imposed limits.
"Mrs. Aimee Bailey is a truly amazing educator who leads our Civics team by example,” said Diplomat Middle School Principal Jason Plucker. “Under her guidance, the team achieved an incredible 79% proficiency rate this year, with Mrs. Bailey’s own students reaching 82% proficiency, surpassing the district's expected growth by a remarkable nine percentage points on the Civics EOC. She is organized, deeply loyal, and incredibly hardworking, but above all, she is a leader of absolute character and integrity."
It was during her first year at Diplomat Middle that Bailey sought opportunities to grow professionally on her own time, leading her to apply for the White House History Teacher Institute in 2024. Now, as a Master Teacher, she has spent months collaborating with the Historical Association staff to shape this year's itinerary, formulate lesson plans, and design activities. During the institute, she will be leading sessions to build collaborative environments, engage in historical inquiries, and develop strategies for high-impact student reflection.
For Bailey, the ultimate goal of this national honor is to bring the inspiration back to her 7th-grade Civics classroom at Diplomat Middle. She views Civics as a critical responsibility to prepare future generations to be active, informed citizens who understand that every individual can make a difference.
"I hope my own journey reinforces that message. I'm a relatively new teacher who came into education as a career changer without a teaching degree, yet I was selected to go to Washington, D.C., to facilitate learning for other teachers," Bradley shared. "If my story shows my students anything, I hope it's that hard work, perseverance, and believing in yourself can open doors you never imagined. I want to lead by example and show them that anything is possible."
Bailey will attend The White House Historical Association’s 10th annual White House History Teacher Institute, July 20-24, a block away from the White House.
