Dunbar High School Continues Its Legacy of Dominating the Microsoft Office Specialist Florida State Competition

Once again, out of the hundreds of thousands of Microsoft competitors for the State of Florida, Dunbar High School continues its dominance and has two more State Champions ready to compete for a national title. Dunbar now has its 11th and 12th Florida State Champions.

Dunbar High School and Certiport, a Pearson VUE business, today announced the following students have been named Florida’s Microsoft Office Specialist Champions for the Fall Qualifying Round in their categories.

  • Teacher Jason Perretta’s freshman student, Carson Mulvey: Florida State Champion Microsoft Word 2016.
  • Teacher Mark Dunaway’s sophomore student, Kevin Dimaculangan: Florida State Champion Microsoft PowerPoint 2016.

Carson and Kevin have been invited to compete at the 2019 Microsoft Office Specialist (MOS) U.S. National Championship at the Hilton Orlando Lake Buena Vista in Orlando, Florida, June 17-19, 2019. Kevin won the 2018 Microsoft Office Specialist World Championship for Excel 2016 in August.

“We have seen amazing results from the Academy for Technology Excellence program at our school, as students learn and validate key workforce skills in network administration, game design and programming, and the digital arts,” said Carl C. Burnside, Principal. “We have once again proven to be the best in our state and I know that these students have the capacity to go beyond this competition to do incredible things.”

Dunbar also had Mr. Jason Perretta’s freshman student, Jada Bunton, as the 3rd Place Florida State winner - Microsoft Word 2016. Although this placement will not take her to the nationals, there is a Spring 2019 qualifying round. She will have an opportunity to try for one of those 1st place spots and hopefully get to attend the national competition as well.

“We have the winning combination of exceptional teachers, a world class technology program and dedicated students, who make it look easy,” said Denise Spence, IT Programs Manager.

Students age 13 to 22 were eligible to participate in one of six competition tracks by submitting a qualified, passing score on any of the Microsoft Office Specialist Word, Excel, or PowerPoint exams by December 15, 2018 for the Fall Qualifier.

During the 2019 MOS U.S. National Championship event, student competitors will take a unique competition exam in their track, further testing their knowledge of the applications. One winner per track will be named the 2019 MOS U.S. National Champion and win a trip to compete in the 2019 MOS World Championship in New York City, NY July 28-31, 2019.

“We’re impressed by these students – not only have they proven they are the best in their state at using Microsoft Office products effectively, they now have an important distinction to place on their resume that shows a desire to learn and validate in-demand skills,” said Craig Bushman, vice president of marketing, Certiport. “The title ‘Microsoft Office Specialist’ will serve them well in their academic and career pursuits.”
