School District Aligning Resources to Invest in our Teachers

The School District of Lee County is building on its commitment to fiscal responsibility by strengthening its budget to ensure long-term stability and its top priority, student achievement. This effort is driven by a continued focus on supporting teachers and ensuring students benefit from consistent, high-quality instruction.

Over the past year, the district has made historic investments in teacher pay, delivering the highest raises in Florida and aggressively reducing hundreds of vacancies, restoring stability in classrooms and improving the learning environment for students.

"Every decision we make comes down to one question: does it lead to better outcomes for our students?" said Superintendent Dr. Denise Carlin. "We know that answer starts with putting highly effective teachers in every classroom. Over the past year, we have made historic investments in teacher pay, dramatically reduced vacancies, and brought greater stability to our schools, all for the benefit of our students.

"The next step is ensuring our budget reflects enrollment realities, the unique needs of each school and its students, and the way the state funds public education. That means making disciplined decisions to streamline district operations so we can continue directing resources where they belong, into our classrooms. This is how we continue to improve student achievement, support our teachers, and keep moving toward the A-rated school district our families deserve."

To reinforce this commitment, the district is requiring each school to align its budget to reflect current enrollment and ensure resources are focused where they have the greatest impact on student performance. Because state funding follows the student, budgets must reflect where students are today, not where they were in the past. This requires disciplined decisions at every level to prioritize classroom resources and reduce unnecessary spending. The goal of this effort is aimed at improving student achievement, increasing teacher pay, and enhancing fiscal responsibility and accountability so that every dollar is spent where it matters most.

This is a shared responsibility across the entire district. Fiscal discipline is not new to this leadership team. When Dr. Carlin took office, she directed every department to cut 5% from their budgets, generating $15.9 million in savings. An additional $6.5 million reduction from the central office is being proposed this year, with further reductions and rightsizing anticipated throughout the 2026-2027 school year. Responsible stewardship of taxpayer dollars is not a one-time exercise, it is a continuous commitment.

By taking these steps now, the district is closing the gap between costs and available revenue while protecting classroom priorities and maintaining its ability to recruit and retain highly effective teachers. The focus remains on strengthening classrooms, not scaling them back.

Every decision is guided by the district's core priorities: strengthening curriculum, improving graduation rates, and moving closer to an A-rated school district. This disciplined approach ensures accountability to the community and a continued focus on delivering results for students.
