The School District of Lee County is excited to announce a new partnership with the Harry Chapin Food Bank to make sure extra food does not go to waste. This pilot program is making its first donation on Friday, August 30th.

“When we have long weekends or holiday breaks, we tend to have items that may perish while the students are gone,” says Director of Food and Nutrition Services Lauren Couchois. “So we are thrilled to be joining forces with the Harry Chapin Food Bank to donate those items for the community’s benefit.”

Food and Nutrition Services orders and prepares food for students as much as possible on an as needed basis to prevent waste, but there will be produce and other items close to their expiration date that schools can choose to donate to Harry Chapin. The food items must be in their original container and kept cold if required. The food bank will then distribute those items to its clients.

“We are excited about this opportunity to reduce waste in the school system and increase the food the food bank is able to distribute to the community,” says Harry Chapin Food Bank Programs Director Kari Lefort.
