Finding Your Path to Success

A different kind of college fair is planned for February 27th. Instead of just inviting upper classmen to meet college representatives, this pilot program is for freshmen and sophomores to plan their path to success.

The School District of Lee County is working with the FutureMakers Coalition at the Southwest Florida Community Foundation and UnMazed Magazine, a local online teen and parent magazine devoted to college readiness, for this first of its kind event. Finding Your Path to Success is geared to promoting early college readiness through workshop-based programming and focuses on reaching students when they are still considering high school programming to best meet their college and career needs.

Finding Your Path to Success is one way the School District of Lee County looks to share their innovative academic and career programs with parents and students. “The School District of Lee County is extremely fortunate to offer more than 30 Career & Technical Education programs to students in grades 9-12 so they can acquire industry-standard skills and certifications before graduating,” says Rita Davis, Director of Adult and Career Education. “In 2017-18, 5,108 industry certifications were earned by Lee County students. These certifications, along with program-specific skills, help students better prepare for their journey into a career and/or college.”

“We have taken common questions asked by parents and students about the high school to college process and created workshops that are interactive and led by experts in the field,” says Amanda Sterk, Ed.D., author of College UnMazed: Your Guide Through the Florida College and University System. “Topics include FAFSA, Scholarships, ACT and SAT Testing, High School Academic Programs, College Admissions, and Mental Health.”

The evening will feature three panel presentations:

  • Funding Your College Aspirations: From Financial Aid to Scholarships
  • Understanding Your Student's High School Academic Options
  • Thinking of Post-Secondary Options: Exploring Multiple Pathways to a Good Career
