Three Schools Named 2020-2023 Florida Arts Model Schools

April 2020

We are proud to announce three schools have been named 2020-2023 Florida Arts Model Schools. Edison Park Creative and Expressive Arts School, North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts and Cypress Lake High School were chosen for their exemplary programs in dance, music, theatre, and visual arts.

Edison Park and North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts were chosen as Arts Model Schools in all four disciplines and earned the highest distinction of Arts Achieve Schools. “North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts is proud to be awarded the prestigious Florida Arts Model School Award,” says Principal Dr. Thomas Millins. “The FAMS arts school designation personifies the “Excellence in the Arts” at NFMAA. We are so proud of our students that strive for excellence in and out of the classroom and the wonderful academic and art teachers that make it all happen.”

Only one other school in the entire state earned the Arts Achieve Schools designation. “It is an honor to be recognized by the Florida Department of Education, and the Florida Alliance for the Arts Education as a Florida Arts Model School,” says Edison Park Art Teacher Dorothy Yorty. “This shows parents and students that we desire to provide our students a well-rounded education that includes a comprehensive, sequential, high-quality program of arts instruction. We, at Edison Park Creative and Expressive Arts School, are excited about the impact the arts make on our school and community.”

Cypress Lake High School earned the Arts Model School Designation for its dance and visual arts programs. “To be recognized this year as we celebrate the 25th anniversary of the opening of the Center for the Arts is very special indeed!” says Principal Angela Roles. “Cypress Lake is honored to earn the state FAMS designation. Our students and faculty are so talented. Behind the scenes we see the hard work and hours that they all put into events and performances. They are the model and make the arts come alive each day at Cypress!”

To be selected as a Florida Arts Model School, the school must show success in leadership, highly qualified and effective arts teachers, curriculum, facilities, scheduling and support, community connection, and school culture in their application. Based on those scores, the strongest schools are then personally evaluated by arts education professionals.

Schools receiving a FAMS designation agree to be assigned a partner school for the duration of their three-year recognition period to model best practices and provide overall assistance in starting or enhancing arts programs at the school. In addition, these schools will welcome visits by faculty teams statewide who wish to enhance or affirm their arts education practices.

Cypress Lake High School was designated a 2019-2022 Arts Model School for its theater program. Edison Park and North Fort Myers Academy for the Arts were both 2017-2020 Arts Achieve Schools and are repeating their three-year designation with this new selection.

All three schools will be recognized for their Florida Arts Model Schools designation at the Florida Alliance for Arts Education Annual Summit June 27th in Cape Coral.
