School District Honors New Teacher of the Year

Superintendent Dr. Denise Carlin recently surprised J. Colin English Elementary School kindergarten teacher Julia Memoli with the 2026 New Teacher of the Year Award. The New Teacher of the Year award recognizes newly certified personnel for their significant contributions to their school and the School District of Lee County.

"I feel very blessed to have this opportunity,” Julia said after receiving her award. “I think that this is something that I didn't expect, and for a first year is a huge accomplishment. I hope to keep growing and achieving things in the future."

Julia says the one thing she tries to be for her students is consistent. She cares about them on a personal level and focuses every day on building relationships they can count on.

“Ms. Memoli deserves recognition for APPLES New Teacher of the Year due to her dedication to learn and grow as a teacher,” said J. Colin English Elementary Principal Misty Smyrnios. “Ms. Memoli is eager to improve instructional practices by taking observation feedback and implementing new techniques in her classroom. In addition, Ms. Memoli radiates positivity, motivating students and families to work hard. Parents are thrilled to be part of the kindergarten experience, shining a light on Ms. Memoli's dedication to her instruction.

The New Teacher of the Year program honors one representative from the School District of Lee County. The nominees are individuals who have demonstrated exceptional skill and dedication in their roles, thereby earning the respect and admiration of students, teachers, administrators, coworkers, parents, and the community.

A selection committee composed of principals, teacher representatives, and district administrative staff reviewed nominations and identified, interviewed, and selected the finalists for New Teacher of the Year.

The School District appreciates Suncoast Credit Union for its generous support of the APPLES New Teacher of the Year Recognition. Their partnership helps to honor and uplift educators who are shaping the future of our school.

Julia will be recognized by the School Board of Lee County at their May 12th meeting.
