Biography:

Mr. Dwayne Alton serves as the Chief Information Officer for the School District of Lee County, where he is recognized as an industry thought leader in enterprise IT strategy, governance, and security. With a career at the District spanning over three decades, Mr. Alton has progressed through key leadership roles, including Director of IT Support and Executive Director of Technology Operations, before assuming the role of CIO in 2021. He holds a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration from the University of South Florida.

Throughout his tenure, Mr. Alton has excelled in aligning technology solutions with organizational goals to enhance operational efficiency. Nationally, he is a prominent voice in educational technology, having served as a K-12 Board Member for the 1EdTech (formerly IMS Global) Learning Consortium and as President of the Florida Association of Educational Data Systems (FAEDS). His work has earned international recognition, including the IMS Global Platinum Award, and he has been featured in publications such as EdTech Magazine and Education Week.

Purpose

The Information Technology division provides the strategic framework and technical infrastructure necessary to empower educators and students through innovative, secure, and reliable technology solutions. We ensure that every digital resource is optimized to support the District’s mission of student success while maintaining the highest standards of fiscal responsibility and data integrity.

  • Information Technology Operations ensures the reliability and performance of the District’s technical ecosystem, maintaining in excess of 99.99% uptime for critical systems for more than a decade. This department manages infrastructure management, technical support services, software solution deployments and the implementation of fault-tolerant data centers to support over 100,000 students and staff.

  • Business Intelligence drives strategic improvements by utilizing data-driven insights to enhance organizational efficiencies and cost reductions. By providing high-level negotiation advice and analytical support, this focus area has contributed to significant organization-wide savings, including over $7 million in cost reductions in a single year.

  • Business Data Systems manages the lifecycle of enterprise-wide information systems, leading the transition from outdated legacy platforms to modern, cost-effective solutions. This focus area prioritizes the integration of enterprise architecture and project management cost savings through strategic system modernizations.

  • Student Data Systems' strategic management of the District’s Student Information System (SIS), with a focus on optimizing master scheduling, FTE (Full-Time Equivalent) reporting, and automated rostering to ensure operational efficiency and regulatory compliance.

  • Information Security and Compliance directs enterprise-wide information security initiatives to ensure 100% compliance with legal, regulatory, and industry standards.
