Superintendent Message - Bus Stop Safety

Dear Families,

Last night, the School District of Lee County hosted a Town Hall Meeting where we brought together community leaders to listen to concerns, solutions and ideas surrounding bus stop safety. I want to thank those of you who took the time to come to the District office, or watch on Facebook or YouTube. If you missed it, you can watch it on YouTube and if you have questions or ideas you would like to share, please email us at

Over the past month the District has been working independently, and with other agencies, to address safety issues.

Last night, based on your feedback, we are identifying semi-permanent stop locations where we can work with municipalities and community groups to place benches and lighting. In addition, our Community Engagement Department is reaching out to those at the meeting who were offering immediate help to make our stops safer. We have also pledged $10,000 to the Lee County Sheriff’s bus stop safety campaign.

We have sent messaging to principals to share with teachers, and in turn students, about bus stop safety, and are working on a larger safety campaign in conjunction with our community partners. We added safety information to the District’s website, as well as created the above email address to solicit ideas, comments and concerns. We have also provided information to municipalities and law enforcement agencies on bus stop locations, and are part of the School Bus Stop Safety Stakeholders' Group which includes the City of Cape Coral, Lee County and the CCPD.

Longer term we are looking at a proximity based choice system where elementary parents would choose between the 4-6 schools closest to their home which will impact stops, ride lengths and possibly school start times.

We understand the community’s demand for change now, and the frustration over the appearance that we are not doing enough. I hope that the actions listed above and the lead we have taken to bring community leaders together shows our unwavering commitment to the safety and security of our students.

Dr. Greg Adkins
