Subject Area Examination Reimbursement Program

Educators who receive a passing score on a Florida Teacher Certification Examination (FTCE) Subject Area Examination in a core academic subject in order to meet certification (or certification renewal) requirements may apply for reimbursement via the 2019-2020 Subject Area Examination Reimbursement Program for Educators. Reimbursements are provided for examinations in core academic subjects and are also made available for ESE student education areas and ESOL as these areas directly support student achievement in core academic subjects.

 Limitations

  • Reimbursements are only available to (a) currently-employed instructional staff members covered by the TALC agreement, and (b) currently-employed instructional staff members in comparable positions at approved public charter schools in Lee County.
  • Reimbursements are available only for examinations passed on or after July 1, 2019, and before June 1, 2020.
  • All requests for reimbursement must be received in Staffing & Talent Management, Human Resources by June 4, 2020.
  • This program is funded by the District’s Title II-A grant, which may or may not be continued in future years.
  • Reimbursements are provided on a first-come, first-served basis, and will only be honored until allocated funds are depleted.
  • Reimbursements will be provided only for the actual cost of regular administrations. Reimbursements for late or emergency registrations will be limited to the amounts of the comparable regular on-time registration.
  • Reimbursements are only available for examinations in a core academic subject.
  • Reimbursements will only be provided for test administrations for which the applicant received a passing score.
  • Applicants may be reimbursed for multiple subject area examinations.
  • The General Knowledge Exam and the Professional Education Exam are not covered under this Reimbursement Program.

How to Apply for Reimbursement

The following documents must be submitted to Staffing & Talent Management, Human Resources in order to participate in the Subject Area Examination Reimbursement Program:

  1. Completed Subject Area Examination Reimbursement Request Form (one request form required per subject area examination).
  2. Copy of registration receipt(s) reflecting examination amount(s) and payment(s).
    • You may contact the FTCE/FELE Testing Center at 1-866-613-3281 to obtain a duplicate registration receipt. Please note that a credit card receipt or bank statement is not acceptable.

    3. Copy of your subject area examination score report(s)
    4. Charter School Employees ONLY, with your application for reimbursement you must also submit a W-9 Form.

Tuition Reimbursement Program

Educators who take coursework in order to meet certification (or certification renewal) requirements in a core academic subject may apply for reimbursement via the 2019-2020 Tuition Reimbursement Program. Reimbursements are also made available for ESE student education areas and ESOL as these areas directly support student achievement in core academic subjects. Professional Education courses taken to meet requirements for a Florida Professional Teaching certificate in a core academic subject are also eligible for reimbursement.

 How to Enroll in an Eligible Course

All applicants assume full and sole responsibility for enrolling in an eligible course. The District does not have the authority to formally approve courses in advance, so the applicant must take the following steps to help ensure an appropriate course selection.

For Courses Taken Outside Degree Programs

Includes professional education coursework listed on your Official Statement of Status of Eligibility (excludes prerequisites and electives).

  1. Obtain an Official Statement of Status of Eligibility from the Florida Department of Education for a core academic subject (not required if course is taken for certification renewal).
  2. Review the available courses at a regionally accredited college or university and select a course that meets the requirements identified on your Official Statement of Status of Eligibility. 
  3. Contact the Florida Department of Education at 1-800-445-6739 to verify course acceptance before enrolling in the course.

 For Courses Taken as Part of an Approved Degree Program

  1. Obtain an Official Statement of Status of Eligibility from the Florida Department of Education for a core academic subject (not required if course is taken for certification renewal or as part of a graduate level degree program for a bachelor level subject area. Visit http://www.fldoe.org/teaching/certification/certificate-subjects/certification-subject-examinations.stml for a list of bachelor level subject areas).
  2. Enroll in a degree program at a regionally accredited college or university, review the available courses and select a course that meets the degree program requirements and leads to certification in a core academic subject as identified on your Official Statement of Status of Eligibility.
  3. Contact the Florida Department of Education at 1-800-445-6739 to verify course acceptance before enrolling in the course.

  • Reimbursement is provided for the cost of tuition only; no other costs are reimbursable, including costs for registration, books, materials, lab fees, parking, etc.
  • The maximum reimbursement for the 2019-2020 school year is six (6) semester hours.
  • The maximum reimbursement per credit hour is the lower amount of either $358.84, or the actual cost of tuition.
  • Courses must be taken for credit at a regionally-accredited, degree-granting college or university.
  • Courses must be relevant toward obtaining certification or certification renewal in a core academic subject or to meet professional education requirements for a Professional Educators Certificate in a core academic subject.
  • Courses that are pre-requisites, co-requisites, or elective courses within a degree program are not eligible for reimbursement.
  • Reimbursements will only be provided for courses for which the applicant received a grade “C” or higher.
  • Courses that are dropped, deferred, or which are otherwise not awarded a grade are not eligible for reimbursement. Courses that are audited are not eligible for reimbursement. 

How to Apply for Reimbursement

The following documents must be submitted to the Staffing & Talent Management Department in order to participate in the Tuition Reimbursement Program:

  1. Completed Tuition Reimbursement Request Form (one request form required per course).
  2. Copy of registration receipt(s) reflecting the cost of tuition and amount paid.
    • If the registration receipt includes fees other than tuition, a detailed fee breakdown from the college/university website should be attached.
  3. Copy of your Official Statement of Status of Eligibility issued by the Florida Department of Education (if applicable).
  4. An Official transcript, reflecting course credit and grade of “C” or higher.
  5. For courses taken within degree programs, also provide official documentation that the course is a required non-elective course within the approved degree program. This can be the relevant section of the university catalog, degree plan signed by the advisor, or an on-line degree audit that lists the specific course.
  6. Charter School Employees ONLY, with your application for reimbursement you must also submit a W-9 Form.
