Fifteen young adult authors are coming to Cape Coral High School on Thursday, March 16th to celebrate reading. To encourage the diverse population of 1,600+ students to read, write and follow their own dreams, the visiting authors will be giving away nearly 1,000 books written by the visiting authors and do classroom visits. The one day event, beginning at 7:30a.m., will culminate with an outdoor festival on the school football field featuring the fifteen young adult fiction authors, as well as hosting games and activities. This portion of the event is from noon until 1:30p.m., rain or shine.
“The majority of the authors are coming from all over Florida, but a few are traveling from out of state,” said Jamie Ayres, Cape Coral High School English teacher, festival coordinator, and one of the featured YA authors at the event. “Many genres are represented and the authors have very diverse backgrounds. Our selection committee did this on purpose. We wanted our students to have a wide variety of novels to choose from, and we wanted them to be able to identify personally with an author, too. We received a $7,500 grant from The Foundation for Lee County Public Schools, another $500 grant from the Dollar General Kids In Need Literacy Foundation, and then our school raised another $500 to purchase 900 books from among the various authors. Some of these authors are critically acclaimed award winners. One, Cinda Williams Chima, is a New York Times best-selling author. All of the authors have become very popular with our students. They can’t wait to meet these amazing creative minds in person on March 16th!”
All of the authors are also scheduled to appear at Barnes & Noble in Fort Myers that evening, March 16th, from 4-6p.m. Jamie Ayres will lead a discussion panel, & authors will be available to sign book copies afterward. 15% of total sales from these authors will be donated back to Cape Coral High School.
The list of authors include: Cinda Williams Chima, Trish Doller, Amy Christine Parker, Wendy Mills, Jenny Torres Sanchez, Erica Cameron, Jeff Strand, Lauren Gibaldi, Jenn Marie Thorne, Teshelle Combs, PK Hrezo, Case Maynard, Katherine Blakeney, J. Keller Ford, and Jamie Ayres.
