Full-time employees, working 30 or more hours per week, receive a $20,000 term life insurance policy (paid by the District), which becomes effective the first of the month after a 45-day waiting period. The life insurance is offered through Minnesota Mutual.

Employee Life Insurance

For new employees, up to $100,000 of life insurance is available with NO Medical Underwriting if elected within the first 30 days of hire. Any amount over $100,000 require medical underwriting*. After the 30 days of hire, ALL amounts over $20,000 will be subject to medical underwriting during the District's Annual Open Enrollment period. The premiums for the additional coverage's are paid by the employee through payroll deduction. The amounts offered are:

These amounts include the $20,000 basic life insurance, which is paid by the District. The cost listed is just for the amount over the basic $20,000.

Spouse Life Insurance

For new employees, you may also purchase coverage on your spouse (legally married). The $20,000 spouse life requires NO Medical underwriting if elected within the first 30 days of hire ($40,000 always requires medical underwriting). Otherwise, both $20,000 and $40,000 will be subject to medical underwriting during the District's Annual Open Enrollment. The premium for spouse insurance is paid by the employee through payroll deduction. The amounts offered are:

Child(ren) Life Insurance

You may also purchase coverage on your child(ren). The criteria is 14 days old to the end of the calendar year they turn 25 years of age as long as he/she are:

  1. financially supported & living at home; OR
  2. financially supported & going to school on a full time/ part time basis.

NO Medical Underwriting is required. Each eligible child will receive the amount selected, but the premium is total (not per child). For example, if you have three (3) children ranging from ages 16, 13, and 9, they each will receive $5,000 or $10,000 of coverage, but the total premium will be the same as the cost for one child. Once all of your children are no longer eligible, then it's the employee's responsibility to contact Insurance & Benefits Management and request to have child life coverage removed.

PLEASE NOTE: If both parents work for the District, only one parent can carry the Child Life Insurance.

How do I change my beneficiary on my life insurance?
