Almost since the 2008/09 school year began, Lee
County Public Schools has been working to plan for next year’s
budget. And as has been widely publicized, the District was
facing reductions anywhere between $40-$70 million.
For a while, like every other district in Florida, Lee County
Public Schools was waiting to see what the State Legislature was
going to do when creating the state’s 2009/10 budget. Things
were constantly in flux and in some cases, changes were
happening on a minute-to-minute basis. Lawmakers made
adjustments, moved funds around from one area to another to
limit – as much as possible – the affect it would have on public
education.
With the final budget numbers in, our District is still facing
millions of dollars in reductions, but it’s not the worst case
as we had been planning for. That still means, however, that
reductions are going to have to be made.
With the final budget numbers in from the state, the
Superintendent of Schools has conducted three Community Budget
Forums to provide information to our stakeholders on what the
situation is currently.
The PowerPoint on this page provides the basic budgetary
numbers; the reductions facing the District; a funding
opportunity provided local school boards by the State
Legislators; and more.
